A mock up is a sample made in a cheaper fabric that is a weight similar to your chosen fabric. It is sewn quickly and without the usual finish on the inside of the garment, often using just a straight stitch – no overlocking. Mock ups are useful to check fit and also to give you the opportunity to refine your design, for example shift a seam line position or increase the gather ratio etc
